STILIMAN is a project started to study organisational innovations, labour relations and their effects on firm performance.

It is well known that firms, even within the same sector, do not have identical characteristics and capabilities, and that the characteristics identifying the best performing firms may differ across sectors and dimension.

The adoption of 'new' or 'flexible' or 'high-performance' work practices was prompted, according to many observers, by some important facts:

change in the type of work following ICT

new organisational models

spread of new styles of (strategic) human resources management based on the involvement of the worker

The empowerment of human resources, aiming at achieving more satisfactory firm performance levels in terms of quality and quantity, was made necessary by:

an increased uncertainty and complexity characterising production and economic sectors (new products, global markets, etc.)

a lack of trust in a work environment based on

an extreme parcelling of work tasks

a rigid "vertical division" of labour (implying a relationship of command)

a conformation of jobs as "compartments"

The new set of concepts and techniques above mentioned is leading to a fundamental change in the nature and content of work. The worker now must possess deeper knowledge and more types of competences and skills, namely managerial, interpersonal, and technical (professional) skills, so that he is now defined as a 'knowledge worker'. The changing nature of work requires a particular attention to structural coherence among five types of variables: the selection criteria, the training systems, the actual work organisation, the system of work relations (information, consultations and bargaining) and remuneration (in both the short and long-run).
